Kathy describes how parents are often unprepared for the challenges of raising a child to grow up free from the effects of violence in the community.

She recommends being a "backbone parent." Neither an overly permissive "jellyfish," a dictatorial "brick wall," nor simply disengaged, the backbone parent listens, communicates, engages, and combines lots of love with clear limits.
